THE NEWLY IMAGINED PRODUCTION OF ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER OPENING NIGHT IS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2011 PREVIEWS BEGIN SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2011 AT BROADWAY’S ST. JAMES THEATRE (New York, NY – Thursday, August 4, 2011) The producers of the newly imagined Broadway production of ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER announced today the co-stars to join Grammy and Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Harry Connick, Jr. as Dr. Mark Bruckner. The roles of David Gamble and Melinda Wells will be played, respectively, by David Turner and Jessie Mueller, in her Broadway debut. Opening night is set for Sunday, December 11, 2011 at The St James Theatre, 246 W. 44th Street. Previews will begin on November 12, 2011. The delightful Tony Award nominated score by Burton Lane (music) and Alan Jay Lerner (lyrics) is enhanced by classics from their film scores for On A Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970) and Royal Wedding (1951). With a new book by Peter Parnell based on the original book by Alan Jay Lerner, the musical is reconceived and directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer. In June 2011, Chris Jones of The Chicago Tribune declared, “Mueller's career, I'm convinced, just needs one more match to explode.” A musical theatre star in her hometown of Chicago, Jessie Mueller will make her Broadway debut as the effervescent jazz singer Melinda Wells in ON A CLEAR DAY. She is the recipient of a Jeff Award, which celebrates excellence in Chicago Theatre, and a Connecticut Critics Circle Award for her performance as Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel at Long Wharf Theatre (CT). Her Chicago credits include Guys and Dolls (Adelaide), Fiddler on the Roof (Tzeital), All Shook Up (Natalie), and Shenandoah (Jenny) at The Marriott Theatre; Merrily We Roll Along (Mary); She Loves Me (Amalia); Animal Crackers at The Goodman Theatre; the regional premiere of Curtains; Meet Me in St. Louis and several productions at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater including Willy Wonka (Veruca Salt ), How Can You Run With a Shell on Your Back? (Daisy), The Three Musketeers and Lady Mortimer in Henry IV, Parts I & II, also on tour at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. Two-time Helen Hayes Award Nominee David Turner will return to Broadway as the highly suggestible young florist David Gamble. According to Peter Marks of The Washington Post, Turner is “blessed with a comic timing that cannot be taught. Could someone sign this man to an ironclad contract? There is something wrong with a universe that hasn't found a prominent perch for him.” Turner has made many notable appearances on Broadway, Off-Broadway and at regional theatres including the 2011 production of Arcadia, Sunday in the Park With George, The Ritz, The Invention of Love, In My Life, Gutenberg! The Musical!, Shakespeare (Abridged), Sir Robin in Spamalot and The Dog in the Manger. A versatile performer, Turner has also written and directed the feature film The Debut, received a Jerry Harrington Award for his work as a composer and lyricist and, as a pianist, has played both Feinstein’s and Birdland. Still in love with his deceased wife, Dr. Mark Bruckner (Harry Connick, Jr.), a dashing psychiatrist and professor, unknowingly takes on the case of his life with David Gamble (David Turner), a quirky young florists’ assistant. While putting David under hypnosis to help him quit smoking so he can move in with his perfect boyfriend Warren, Dr. Bruckner stumbles upon what he believes to be David’s former self – a dazzling and self-possessed 1940’s jazz singer Melinda Wells (Jessie Mueller). Instantly intrigued by Melinda, Dr. Bruckner finds himself swept up in the pursuit of an irresistible (and impossible) love affair with this woman from another time and place, who may or may not have ever existed. ORIGINAL PRODUCTION HISTORY ON A CLEAR DAY originally opened on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theatre on October 17, 1965 and starred Barbara Harris as Daisy Gamble/Melinda Wells and John Cullum as Dr. Mark Bruckner, who both received Tony Award Nominations for their performances, as did the score. In 1970 it was adapted into a film directed by Vincente Minnelli, which starred Barbra Streisand as Daisy/Melinda and Yves Montand as Dr. Mark Bruckner. NEW PRODUCTION HISTORY Following a developmental workshop at The Vineyard Theatre in the fall of 2009, the production received a series of concert readings as part of New York Stage and Film and Vassar’s Powerhouse Theater season in the summer of 2010. This summer, The Vineyard Theatre (108 E. 15 Street) produced a developmental process for the show that culminated in a week-long developmental lab production.
